Basic Greetings and Responses

あいさつ (aisatsu)- Greetings

The Japanese have different greetings for different times. The basic ones they use exist in more or less all languages worldwide.

The basic Japanese greetings include as follows:

(おはようございます。)Ohayou gozaimasu-
 Good morning
こんにちは。)Konnichiwa
It means Hello/Good afternoon.
こんばんは。Konbanwa-
It means Good evening.
おやすみなさい。)Oyasumi nasai-
It stands for Good night.
さようなら。)Sayounara-
It means Good-bye.
 (おげんきですか。) Ogenki desu ka
It means How are you? 
(はじめまして。)Hajimemashite–
It stands for Nice to meet you
(ありがとうございます。)Arigatou gozaimasu
It represents Thank you
(すみません。) Sumimasen–
It stands for I’m sorry/ Excuse me
(どうぞよろしく)Douzo yoroshiku-

What do the following mean as far as greetings and responses in Japanese are concerned?

    Ja mata means "see you" in English

  3. Your attempts are correct Elizabeth. no.7 means "see you later or bye"
    no.9 means "it's okay" or rather "don't worry"
    and no.10 means to be impolite.

  4. thanks. To the end of Ja Mata you can also add "ashita" or "raishu" to mean tomorrow or next week respectively. じゃまたあした。じゃまたらいしゅう
